Out & About: Poe's Baltimore

October 8, 2017

What timing! This week I happened to be passing through Baltimore, Maryland during the same week as the anniversary of Edgar Allen Poe's death. I didn't realize this until I stopped by his Baltimore home which is now a museum. It was incredible to see, especially on this cloudy fall day. The house is dark, cramped and the exact place I could see Poe slouched over a wooden table in a candle-lit corner scribbling away at his macabre tales.

Before visiting Poe's home, I stopped by his gravesite at the Westminster Hall and Burying ground. Really, this was the perfect day to do an impromptu Poe tour. The burying ground was quiet, and empty. I took a few photographs and placed a white rose on his gravestone. There were already a handful of roses there...

Edgar Allen Poe's tales and poems are so beautiful, shocking, touching, disturbing and brilliant. He's one of my favorite American writers and I couldn't be happier to spend the day remembering and celebrating his life and timeless work.
